On May 2, 2009 Heroes Today will be hosting its 2nd Annual Homeless Veteran Dinner at Steel City Rib House, 220 N. Highland Avenue (East Liberty), Pittsburgh, Pa 15206. Last year’s dinner allowed Heroes Today the opportunity to provide all you can eat meals to 22 homeless veterans from the Allegheny County area. We were also privileged to have 6 volunteers from the community help serve food and accommodate our homeless veterans.
As you may be aware, currently throughout the United States on any given night there are approximately 200,000 homeless veterans and more than 500,000 will experience homelessness over the course of a year. Here in Allegheny County it is estimated that there are over 300 homeless veterans each night and 1100 during the course of a year.
The importance of this dinner is that it becomes a tool to identify these veterans, gather necessary data about these veterans and provide or refer these veterans to needed services. This in turn helps to reduce the numbers of homeless veterans that are currently on the street. It also allows Heroes Today to develop a relationship with these veterans. This relationship gives Heroes Today the opportunity to gather vital information about other homeless veterans that will be used during our monthly outreach. There will also be a few employers there that will be wanting to hire veterans.
We also give each veteran a survival bag. The survival bag is a backpack that is filled with items that are very useful for homeless veterans items such as socks, t-shirt, underwear, hats, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, tooth brush, foot powder, mouthwash, sunscreen, chap stick, comb and brush.
This year we are planning to have at least 50 homeless veterans attend the dinner, but we need your help. Currently we are requesting donations to support this effort to help these veterans and get them the much needed services that they deserve.
